Am I losing out on quality if I buy used instead of new?
Short answer: No, but let’s dig a bit deeper…
Raise your hand if you’ve ever shopped for a used car before. Great! Now put your hand down, you look weird. But yes, if you’re already aware of what to look for in a used vehicle, the decision between a new and used piano is surprisingly similar; especially when you take into account depreciation, past maintenance, and certified/authorized dealers and refurbishments. And let’s face it – just like a car, a piano is no small investment.
The pros and cons of a brand new piano are relatively straightforward. Buying new guarantees original ownership, and often includes some sort of manufacture warranty within the first few years. And if purchased from a reputable dealer, it should be delivered to your abode in pristine condition, and also come with an initial tuning service to make sure you’re properly up and running. At Kim’s Piano, this is provided with each one that leaves our showrooms. So, to quickly sum up, you may pay more up front for a brand new piano, but there is a peace of mind that comes baked in with the cost.
Now let’s talk about the pros of used instruments. The first thing that comes to mind is obviously the price. Compared to a brand new model, you’ll be able to purchase the same model for a discounted amount if pre-owned. No surprises there. Moreover, buying a well-known brand could lessen the depreciation value associated with all pianos once they leave the store, new or used. And if you happen to find one that’s a keeper, it could potentially become a family heirloom, as most pianos can be restored to a close match of their original glory. Our showrooms have a number of premium restored pianos from world-class makers such as C. Bechstein, Blüthner, and Steinway & Sons that are almost a century old, but play like they were just recently manufactured!
Which brings us to the cons of buying second-hand. Also similar to used cars, a piano can have an untold history of restoration; so, it’s best to source them from somewhere you trust. Or if buying from a private seller, it may be worthwhile to hire an independent piano technician to inspect the instrument – they have the expertise to spot any issues that may not be immediately apparent to the average consumer.
Fortunately, at Kim’s Piano we have you covered with one of the largest selections of artisan makers in the country. We have a wide variety of new and used pianos to fit every budget, as well as digital and hybrid options. Every piano in our possession is meticulously maintained by our expert technicians, and voiced with every level of player in mind. New or used, you will be getting an instrument that you’ll be proud to feature in your own home. Now all that’s left is to come see us! We look forward to showing you around!
